The “Secure Living Project” (Abitare sicuri/sicheres wohnen), sponsored by The City of Bolzano and developed by IBM in cooperation with TIS is part of an initiative to enhance the quality of life of the elderly, providing greater independence and integration into society, while, at the same time, lowering public spending through more accessible and less invasive technologies. Already 30 elderly people in need of in-home assistance have been equipped with sensors and monitoring equipment in their homes as part of a pilot project. I designed the full project logic including the remote monitoring logic based on zig-bee to android and defined processes and requirements. I also dealed with all the actors (the city hall, the social services, the health dept), involved business partners as Eurotech and Huawei, and led the teams for the full project course.
The project have 2 main folds:
Home remote Sensoring
The system is based on a net of integrated mesh-networked zigbee sensors broadcasting data about the assisted person and home environment via architecture developed on a WebSphere Application Server, DB2 and MQ Telemetry Transport for reliable messaging. Information is displayed on a dashboard in the control room and on the operator’s Android mobile devices via e-mail, SMS or Twitter. Data on each home is monitored and analyzed, and if necessary, if immediate action is required, a first alert is sent to a panel of relatives/or so called “angels” then to a dedicated team from the Bolzano Social Services Department is alerted.
Home remote interaction
Half of the group (15 users) communicates with health professionals in a central monitoring station via touch screens, the other half (15 users) communicates via mobile devices using applications developed by the business partner Dr. Hein GmbH. These devices allow residents to interact with the health professionals and provide health recommendations. For example, the professionals can provide suggestions on a series of activities, including tutored physical training, exercises to stretch mental faculties, or answer healthcare questions. Health data on each participant is collected and analyzed, and if necessary, if immediate action is required, a dedicated team from the Bolzano Social Services Department is alerted.
